FEBRUARY 2026

It's February...Ice Diving?

Here are some fascinating facts about ice diving:

  • Extreme Visibility: Due to reduced water circulation and lack of wind, debris settles to the bottom, offering some of the clearest, most undisturbed water on Earth.
  • Frozen Equipment Hazard: If not properly sealed, moisture inside a regulator can freeze instantly in sub-zero air temperatures, causing a "free-flow" of air.
  • Unique Marine Life: In Antarctica, divers can see creatures like 40-year-old, four-inch scallops and massive sea spiders.
  • Underwater "Sunrises": The sunlight filtering through cracks and thinner patches of ice can create dramatic, eerie,, and beautiful lighting effects.
  • Required Safety Lines: Ice divers are almost always connected to a tether (safety line) managed by a surface support team, treating the dive as a confined space penetration.
  • Slowed Metabolism: Cold water can slow the movement of marine life, allowing for closer, more patient observation of species that might otherwise swim away.
  • Drysuit Necessity: A drysuit is mandatory to maintain body heat, as standard wetsuits are inadequate for the extreme temperatures.
  • Physical Impairment: Divers can experience severe, unexpected, and sometimes undetected impairment from the cold, making it crucial to manage dive times carefully.
  • Spectacular Photography: The unique lighting and, in some places, air bubbles trapped in the ice, offer incredible, once-in-a-lifetime photography opportunities.
