The SSI Open Water Scuba Diver Certification is a three step process.

Step One:    Academics - You can complete them online FREE when you sign up for SSI’s Online Training program.  Click Here to start today!

Step Two:  Pool Training - You will learn all the skills you will be using in the open water in the safety of a pool.  Click Here to view training locations and schedules.

Step Three:  Open Water Certification Dives - These dives are completed in an open water environment (quarry, lake, or ocean) over the course of two days. A diver must complete four dives performing the required skills in order to complete the course. Southern Ohio Diving Academy offers several options regarding Open Water Certification. During the warm summer months, SODA completes most Open Water Certification Dives at Natural Springs Resort in New Paris OH.  In winter, we offer two trips to Northern Florida. Certification dives can also be completed most anywhere in the world by referral.  

After successfully completing the Academics, the Pool and Open Water Sessions you will be certified as SSI Open Water Diver - It's your global license to dive!

AGE REQUIREMENT - Must be at least 10 years old to participate in an Open Water Class.  Students between the ages of 10-15 years old will achieve the rating of Junior Open Water Diver upon completion of their Open Water Certification.  Junior Open Water Divers at the age of 10 and 11 years old are allowed  to dive up to a depth of  40 feet and must be accompanied by a scuba certified adult at all times.   Junior Open Water Divers at the age of 12 to 14 years old are allowed to dive up to a depth of 60 feet and must be accompanied by a scuba certified adult at all times.  When a Junior Open Water Diver becomes 15 years old, he/she is eligible to upgrade to Open Water Diver certification at the Dive Centers/Instructors discretion.  A skill evaluation may be required.
