Standard
Class Details
As
a certified Open Water Diver, you have the freedom to
dive with a buddy independent of a professional. If
you're not in a hurry to get certified then a STANDARD
CLASS is probably the best fit for you.
Standard Open Water Classes - Meet 3-6 weeks depending
on location of your choice. These classes are offered
at the Beavercreek YMCA, Downtown Dayton YMCA, Englewood
YMCA, Huber Heights YMCA, Kettering South Community
YMCA, Moraine Natatorium, Springboro Coffman Family
YMCA and the West Carrollton YMCA. See complete schedules
for all locations below.
Open Water Diver Rating - This is a lifetime certification
which allows divers to dive to a maximum depth of 60-100
feet with a buddy independent of professional supervision.
AGE REQUIREMENT - Must be at least 10 years old to participate
in an Open Water Class. Students between the ages of
10-15 years old will achieve the rating of JR. Open
Water Diver upon completion of their Open Water Checkouts.
A JR. Open Water Diver is limited to diving to 40 feet
in depth and must be accompanied by a scuba certified
adult at all times.
3 Steps of the Certification Process - A student must
pass all three parts of the certification process in
order to achieve an Open Water Diver Rating. Step one:
Classwork - Step Two: Pool Skills - Step Three: Open
Water Checkout Dives.
Open Water Checkout Dives - These dives are completed
in an open water environment (eg. quarry, lake, ocean)
over the course of two days. A diver must complete four
dives performing the required skills in order to complete
the course. Southern Ohio Diving Academy offers several
options regarding Open Water Checkouts. During the warm
summer months, SODA completes most Open Water Checkouts
at Natural Springs Resort in New Paris OH ($175). In
Winter, we offer two trips to Northern Florida in order
to accommodate checkouts. A student may also complete
their checkouts on vacation. See instructor for more
details on this option.
Standard Class Cost - $169 per student. YMCA Members
receive a $25 discount.
Required Materials - Students must purchase an Open
Water Diver Kit with DVD to complete classwork. The
kit includes Textbook, DVD, Zipper Log, Training Record
and Dive Tables $72.95 #05AL2564. Each additional family
member may purchase an Open Water Diver Kit without
DVD $58.95 #05AL2563.
Required Equipment - Students must supply their own
mask, snorkel, fins and boots for the course. All major
dive equipment is provided.
SODA Student Discount - All SODA students receive a
10% In-Store discount on most any purchase for the duration
of their class.
What is a "Try Scuba"? - The Try Scuba session
listed before each class start date is a free session
designed to allow a potential student the opportunity
to try diving before signing up for a class. A Try Scuba
is absolutely free and SODA schedules a Try Scuba one
week before the beginning of each of our Standard Classes.
There is no need to register before attending a Try
Scuba Session; just show up on the listed date and time
with a swimsuit and a towel. All minors must be chaperoned
by a parent or guardian in order for us to obtain written
permission before allowing the minor to participate
in the Try Scuba Session. A Try Scuba is NOT part of
the actual class. A SODA Instructor will be on-hand
to explain the dive gear, help you get into the gear
and into the water (shallow end ONLY) and answer any
questions you may have regarding scuba or the upcoming
class.
